RE: Express Lanes Help Shorten Security Delays

Dear Readers:

Over Thanksgiving, Delta began quiet testing of new express lanes at security checkpoints for gold and platinum medallion level members of its SkyMiles frequent flyer program, as well as those traveling on first class tickets.

At Hartsfield Atlanta Airport, look for the exclusive entrance (a door with a small sign on a stand next to it) in the South terminal corridor behind the Delta check in counters, and to the right of (and around the corner from) the main security area. There, a Delta employee will ask to see your Delta SkyMiles card or boarding pass before allowing you to enter.

Delta’s express lanes are also being tested at security checkpoints at airports in Boston, Cincinnati, Dallas (DFW), New York (Newark, LaGuardia, and JFK), and Salt Lake City.

Note that express lane access is currently NOT available to silver medallion members, nor million-milers, unless they have confirmed first class reservations and are holding a boarding pass to prove it. After an initial period of monitoring actual passenger numbers, Delta may allow silver medallion member access to these lanes.

Delta stresses that these new lanes are currently in the testing phase only, with a formal roll-out (and expansion to more airports) not expected until early 2002. As a result, there are no signs directing elite level members to these special lanes-- you must ask Delta representatives where to find them.

Our take: This is the first step in a plan that will eventually lead to the creation of a frequent traveler’s passport of sorts, allowing airlines, working closely with the new federal airport security apparatus, to pre-screen and better identify frequent travelers using smart cards and bio-metric devices like iris or fingerprint readers.

Happy Flying!

Regards,
Chris McGinnis
